UK's US Ambassador resigns

The UK’s Ambassador to the United States, Sir Kim Darroch, has resigned after US President Donald Trump branded him “a very stupid guy”.

It comes after leaked cables that showed Ambassador Darroch making negative comments about Trump’s Administration, including describing the operation as “incompetent”.

After earlier saying that he would no longer deal with Darroch, Trump has followed up by saying: “The wacky Ambassador that the UK foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy.

“He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was handled.

“I told Theresa May how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way-was unable to get it done. A disaster!

“I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far and they are both only getting bigger, better and stronger.

“Thank you, Mr. President!”

Meanwhile in yesterday’s TV debate, the man likely to be next Prime Minister didn’t exactly back Darroch either. Asked if he would keep him on as Ambassador to the US, Boris Johnson said: “I’m not going to be so presumptuous as to think I’m going to be in a position (to do that)”.

And he followed up by saying: “I have a very good relationship with the White House. It’s very important that we should have a close friendship, a close partnership with the United States.”

Instead of forging a new massive trade deal with the United States, there’s diplomatic embarrassment. Time for clear out and a fresh start.
