Sir Kim has described the Administration as “inept”, “insecure” and “incompetent”.

The leaked memos have been seen by the Mail on Sunday and include one that says: “We don’t really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.”

The Ambassador even questions whether Trump’s Administration will “ever look competent”.

This is damaging at a time when the US President has frequently spoken out in favour of a bumper US-UK trade deal post-Brexit when Britain takes back control with an independent trade policy.

In November 2016, Trump suggested that Nigel Farage could have been the Ambassador, saying: “Many people would like to see Nigel Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!”

Farage himself has responded to the leaked memos by saying: “Kim Darroch is totally unsuitable for the job and the sooner he is gone the better.”
