Study finds German media backed Merkel’s open border policy, ignored public opinion

An analysis of several thousand articles published in Germany between February 2015 and March 2016, has concluded that mainstream German media failed to cover the migration crisis in a balanced way, choosing instead to propagandise for Merkel and her chums.

Researchers at the Hamburg Media School and the University of Leipzig found that the major German newspapers, Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Bild, all supported the policy of the German government in welcoming huge waves of people onto the continent.

The study reveals that despite huge opposition to the policy among the German people, the mainstream media continued to support and promote the government line, uncritically supporting the “solutions of the political elite”.

Professor Michael Haller, lead author of the study, told Die Zeit that the vast majority of articles published in the German press on the subject of migration “totally and deliberately ignore public opinion and ignores the opinions of experts on the subject … The articles are almost always imbued with the personal opinions of their authors.”

Another key point of the study acknowledges the fact that the media infer or directly imply that any opponent of mass migration are “racist”. Westmonster is pleased to see academics catching up with what some of us have been saying for years.

Haller also criticises the way migrants are portrayed in the media, saying they are treated with “too much good-humankind sentimentality and too few critical inquiries”, which isn’t surprising, given the fact virtually nobody is talking about how most of the migrants coming to Europe are actually economic migrants and not “refugees.”
