Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has confirmed that those Brits living in Spain will have their rights protected even in the event of a No Deal Brexit, once again exposing Project Fear scaremongering.
Speaking at a press conference at the end of 2018, Sanchez said: “I want to convey a message of calm for the Spaniards who live in the United Kingdom and also the British who reside in Spain.”
He was clear: “Their rights will be preserved whatever the scenario.”
This would of course require those Spanish citizens living in the UK to receive the same treatment – something that has been pledged by PM Theresa May anyway.
As soon as the British government began ramping up seriously for No Deal, Brussels reacted and released guidance that urged “a generous approach to the rights of UK citizens in the EU, provided that this approach is reciprocated by the UK” and said that “UK citizens legally residing in the EU on the date of withdrawal will continue to be considered legal residents”.
Given No Deal is an increasingly popular choice for British voters, it is important to note that European leaders are now giving guarantees, deal or No Deal. The UK must leave the EU on 29th March 2019, one way or another.
