Salvini vows to slash €5bn migration budget, takes huge swipe at Juncker

Matteo Salvini, the Leader of Lega and the man tipped to become Italy’s new Interior Minister, has said he wants to slash the current €5bn asylum and migration budget – he also tore into Jean-Claude Juncker.

Italy seems to be on the verge of a Eurosceptic coalition between the 5 Star Movement and Lega, and it spells disaster for the EU.

Salvini reportedly gave a speech yesterday evening saying he wants to ‘take a scissor’ to the €5bn migrant budget, a comment that hints that he intends to make good on his promise to increase migrant repatriations instead of simply letting them move to Italy permanently.

In a joint plan of action announced under initial coalition talks, the parties revealed plans to scrap austerity measures and repatriate migrants.

Salvini said: “I want to give a scissor to the five billion Euro we spend every year to keep immigrants.”

He then appears to hit back at Juncker’s comments that the Italians need to work harder and not blame their problems on the EU, saying: “Italians corrupt and sluggish? We have nothing to learn from him.”

And given that a prominent anti-Euro politician in the form of Paolo Savona is set to become the Minister for European Affairs how long is it before Italy leaves the single currency and maybe the EU altogether?
