Record number of migrants living in Germany

There are now a record number of migrants living in Germany – the figure currently stands at 10.6m.

So of the 82 million people living in Germany, around 1 in 8 are foreign nationals, according to the Federal Statistics Office.

Citizens of Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq make up 11.2% of the total number of foreigners.

A total of 1.6m people from Middle Eastern nations and Africa have applied for asylum in Germany since 2014.

The number of people from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia rose by 12.5% year on year.
