'Record number' of boats in single day intercepted off Kent coast

A ‘record number’ of boats containing illegal immigrants have been intercepted by the UK Coastguard off the coast of Kent today.

Border Force officials confirm they responded to thirteen migrant boats with more than 30 individuals brought to shore to receive medical attention.

Conservative MP for Dover, Charlie Elphicke responded to events claiming that if confirmed “this would be a record number of boats arriving in a single day.

It is assumed the good weather has played a part in encouraging migrants to make the perilous journey across the Channel.

Elphicke said: “This crisis was meant to have been dealt with at Christmas, yet numbers continue to rise. It looks set to surge to record levels through the summer.

“The Home Office needs to get a grip on this crisis.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Border Force is currently dealing with ongoing small boat incidents off the Kent coast. Further details will be provided once the situation has been resolved.”
