Man arrested after 27 migrants found in lorry on M6

A driver has been held after 27 suspected illegal migrants were found in the back of his vehicle.

There was chaos last night as part of the M6 was shut, after Staffordshire police stopped the lorry.

A 42-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of facilitating the illegal entry of people into the UK.

An eyewitness told BBC Stoke that: “They pulled a white trailer up on the side and they were shouting ‘are they in here?’

“The driver opened the vehicle and I just watched 15 of them come out.”

It is then thought some of the migrants attempted to flee, but were eventually detained by police.

Another witness, Martin Kavanagh, told Sky News: “It looks to me like east African refugees, one lying on the hard shoulder, several have been taken into ambulances, there was one at large on the far side of the opposite southbound carriageway and police apprehended that individual and brought him back over,”

Nigel Farage responded to the incident by tweeting: “How many hundreds of illegal migrants are coming in that we don’t know about? These are just the ones that got caught.”
