Macron: Nationalism is betrayal of patriotism

French President Macron has claimed that “nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism” just weeks after US President Trump declared: “I’m a nationalist.”

Macron’s comments come off the back of his demands for a ‘real European army’ to counter, amongst others, America. He currently has a 70% disapproval rating amongst French voters.

Writing on Twitter, Macron now insists: “Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism. Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By putting our own interests first, with no regard for others, we erase the very thing that a nation holds dearest, and the thing that keeps it alive: its moral values.”

He also wrote that “old demons are rising again”, whilst welcoming Trump’s visit to France to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1.

Those in Brussels are taking an increasingly hostile approach to the US, including German EU Commissioner Gunther Oettinger describing Trump as an “autocrat”. Their desire for a full EU Army is pretty disturbing.
