A motion of no confidence against him passed by 182 to 131, illustrating the massive anger with Grieve’s campaigning to stop Brexit.
The Chairman of the Beaconsfield Conservative Association, Jackson Ng, responded by saying: “He remains our Conservative MP but I will be speaking as soon as possible to my fellow officers and the Executive Council.”
Others against Brexit were quick to defend him, including Labour MP Phil Wilson: “I’m not of the same politics as Dominic Grieve but to deselect him as a Conservative candidate is to diminish politics, see an end to political integrity and deprive politics of a sincere and thoughtful practitioner. Ridiculous.”
Another Labour MP, Dr. Paul Williams, said: “Dominic Grieve (who won’t *ever* be on Twitter!) has put country & his principles before party & career to fight May’s damaging Brexit. He’s a man of true courage, respected across the Commons, who shows true leadership. So sad for him that UKIP have taken over his Association.”
Back in 2017, Grieve had said that the “decision of the electorate in the Referendum must be respected” and that “I accept the result of the 2016 Referendum”.
But in 2019 he’s changed his tune completely and now says: “I continue to believe that a further public consultation through a referendum offers the best way forward.”
