Dutch PM: 'Waning' Brexit UK too small to appear on world stage

The Dutch Prime Minister has launched an extraordinary attack on Brexit Britain, claiming that Britain is “already weakening”, that we are a “waning country” and “too small to appear on the world stage on its own”.

Appearing to try and act tough ahead of European Elections and Dutch anti-EU forces rising domestically, Rutte told Spain’s El Pais: “Who will leave weakened Brexit is United Kingdom.

“It is already weakening, it is a waning country compared to two or three years ago. It is going to become an economy of intermediate size in a place of the Atlantic Ocean.

“It is neither the US nor the EU. It is too small to appear on the world stage on its own.”

Asked about the prospect of the European Union securing a deal with the UK, Rutte also said that: “My impression is that the ball is advancing towards the precipice and everyone screams to stop, but nobody does anything to stop it, at least, from the British side.

“Some British parliamentarians say that we want to trap them in a permanent limbo. But it is not true. The EU is interested in moving to the next phase as soon as possible and starting a new relationship with the United Kingdom.

“But given May’s efforts to renegotiate the Irish safeguard, I do not know how this will end and if we can avoid a hard Brexit, it would be devastating for the UK.”

The fact that the UK has just seen inflation fall, wages rise and the lowest unemployment rate since the 1970s seems to have passed by the Dutch PM who seems more interested in trashing the future prospects of a post-Brexit UK. These are supposed to be our allies?
