Caulfield: Is there even democracy in this country anymore?

Conservative MP Maria Caulfield has reflected growing anger from Brexiteers at the attempted establishment stitch-up going on in Parliament, questioning whether “there is even democracy in this country anymore”.

After a day in which the government lost multiple votes and MPs pushed to seize control of the Brexit process if Theresa May’s deal is rejected, Caulfield tweeted: “Coming from a non-political background I naively thought being a MP was about making a difference to people’s lives.

“Today I saw the reality. Not sure there is even democracy in this country anymore. The powerful elite seem to know best and openly mock the rest of us.”

For a Member of Parliament to be saying such a thing reflects the damage that will be done to Britain’s democracy if the referendum result is dismissed and overruled by politicians.
