Catalonia's new First Minister is ultra pro-independence Quim Torra

After the ousting of the Eurosceptic Regional President Carles Puigdemont following the unsanctioned independence referendum in the region, Catalonia has a new First Minister: Quim Torra.

It follows a period of direct rule from Madrid. Last night the controversial Torra narrowly winning a vote by 66 to 65.

Setting out his stall, Torra has said: “I want it to be clear that our President is Carles Puigdemont and we will be loyal to the mandate of October 1 to build an independent state in the form of a republic.”

Old, now deleted tweets by him in the past had claimed that “the Spanish only know how to pillage” with another reading “fascism of the Spanish who live in Catalonia is infinitely pathetic and repulsive”.

All in all it underlines once again how strong the pro-independence feeling is within Catalonia. All over the country regions are wanting more autonomy and control.T he direct opposite of the European Union.
