Cowardly Tony scared of death threats...

blair painting.jpgSecond Coming Middle East envoy Tony Blair has decided to cancel his peace spreading visit to Gaza after 'specific threats' were made against him. The planned trip would have been the highest-level diplomatic mission to the territory since the Hamas seized control of it about a year ago, though the ex-PM had not been expected to meet with representatives from the group.

The news will come as a shock for many Blairites, particularly those who have bought into the idea that the Mr Blair is imbued with the powers of God himself. Indeed, if a man like Tony can't take a death threat or two on the chin then what chance do the rest of us have?

Mr Blair's decision not to enter Gaza has been described by the majority of reports as being very much a last minute one. Blair and his entourage had made it all the way to Israel before giving up on the trip into Gaza, waiting at Israel's Erez Crossing for two hours before announcing the cancellation officially. Blair had left the group by the time the news was made public.

A spokesman for Blair, Matthew Doyle, said the decision was taken "due to a specific security threat which would have made it irresponsible to proceed, not just for those visiting but also the local community. He looks forward to being able to go to Gaza again in the future and will of course in the meantime continue to work to improve the conditions for the people there."

The planned trip would have involved Tony meeting with traders and inspecting a sewage project being built with international funds.

It was very lucky that the Israelis found out about the threat. If they had not found out about it he may have gone in and started to do something that was going to be effective and that was not in the interest of the Israelis. I know that his doing anything that is worthy and truly effective is as likely as Gobble Brown walking on water (or petrol) but you can't blame the Israelis for being cautious.
