Lib Dem leader in racist outburst mayhem
Sticking to your guns can often be a good thing. It shows commitment, courage, stamina and integrity. If, however, people are calling for your resignation after you used a hugely offensive racial slur at a public meeting, it's probably for the best to admit your stupidity and graciously accept your P45.
Despite being widely known as an 'anti-racist' campaigner, Michael Rich - leader of Broxtowe Borough Council - shocked a roomful of people by using the phrase 'nigger in the woodpile' to describe a problem drawing up an agreement. He has since apologised unreservedly ... but is refusing point-blank to step down.
According to Mr. Rich:
"I made a sincere apology, and the issue, as far as I'm concerned, is closed. I'm a student of languages and understand the meaning of the words 'figure of speech.' I actually said 'if you'll excuse the expression' before using the phrase. The qualification was obviously not sufficient, and the remark was inappropriate. "N***** in the woodpile' is thought to have been first used in the US in the mid-19th century to describe a significant fact that is not disclosed."
Academic analysis which has failed to impress Aneela Asim, chief executive of the Nottinghamshire Black Partnership:
"If you are using language of that nature then you are disempowering the community before you have even reached out to them."
Well. The whole situation sounds like a total fuck-up to us. If you'll excuse the expression.
