Labour definitely not running against Davis...

225px-David_Davis_MP,_March_2008.jpgLabour today confirmed that they won't be running against cheeky David Davis in the by-election forced by his resignation last week, despite his calling Gordon Brown 'gutless' for not even thinking about competing. The announcements were made after Davis formally resigned as the Conservative's shadow home secretary, in a move that was labelled by Gordon Brown as a 'farce', because of his feelings regarding the 42 day detention of suspected terrorists.

"By-elections are for when a member of Parliament dies (fingers crossed) or when they are genuinely going on to another job,"is how Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman justified her party's decision not to compete, "This by-election is a frolic and it's more to do with internal divisions in the Conservative Party." Estimates say that it will cost about £80,000 to run a by-election, paid for by us lucky council taxpayers.

Davis confirmed that he will be standing as an official Conservative candidate and also stated that his move was supported by the majority of the public. Although he has called Labour gutless for not competing against him, the Lib Dems and BNP have also announced that they won't be contending either, meaning that they only other 'serious' competetion for Davis will come from the Monster Raving Loony Party. The poll will take place on July 10th.
