Tories may bar lesbians from IVF...

The Conservative Party has managed to rattle the Lesbian Community's cage by announcing that it would like to place restrictions on tribade couples having access to IVF treatment. Although the current Labour government doesn't see any problems with lesbians bringing up children by themselves, David Cameron and his party feel that children should be brought up under the guidance of a 'father figure'. His new plans would mean that lesbian couples would have to agree to providing their child with one before going ahead with treatment.

As of yet, there are no announcements as to where Cameron's 'father figures' will come from. Perhaps he feels that lesbians are somehow endowed with the magical ability to grow them on trees (which could also explain Boris Johnson's tree campaign?!?!).

Andrew Lansley, the shadow health secretary, stated that:

"This is not to discriminate against same-sex couples or single parents, but to ensure that the responsibility to a child is discharged."

The move certainly sounds well and good in a dream world, but in the world that the rest of us have been left to fester in, it doesn't really seem relevant. There are numerous English kids with divorced heterosexual parents who don't have a father figure in their lives, and numerous others who rarely see their fathers because of the increasing amount of time that men are forced to spend away in the office. So what difference does it really make?

Whereas most people can see that times have changed, the Conservatives seem to think that we can revert to the to the good old days. It is doubtful that could really be achieved without some sort of Nazi regime knocking the public back into old fashioned states of repression. Most Conservative MPs are too busy viewing the world from their upper-class bubbles to know what's really going on in the rest of the world. Last year David Cameron showed how deeply his ignorance is rooted with a 'Lithuanian lesbian' joke, and further moves along today's lines simply show how out of touch they are with the little people.
