Ministry for Deliverance

Holy Blair comes out the closet...

holy light.jpgTony Blair came out of the holy closet today by revealing that his new purpose in life is to breed understanding between the world's religions. With a manic gleam in his unblinking eyes, he told the interviewers at Time Magazine that Christianity had long been a part of his life, and that, during his time as Prime Minister, it was the only thing that got him through some of the more difficult times.

The revelations come as Blair prepares for the New York opening of his new Faith Foundation, a body that aims to increase dialogue and practical work between all the world's religions. But if the fervent nature of Blair's religion comes as a bit of a surprise to you then, then perhaps that's just because he didn't want you to know about it. During a documentary last year he admitted that he had to keep it a secret to avoid being labelled as a 'nutter'.

How very ironic...

Westmonster had often ruminated upon the Blair ego. Watching him deliver speeches like sermons with those clenched hands and those effusive gesticulations, we always wondered what was going on in his head. He spoke like a man who felt he belonged before us, yet as more than just our political leader. But where we had once attributed this to an over-inflated ego, or a tawdry megalomania, perhaps we must now question whether or not Ol' Tony is suffering from the Messiah Complex.

Many people within the Labour Party have spoken about lower-level politicians looking up to the ex-PM with a sense of awe and veneration. From the sounds of it, though, the cult of Blair could have reached deeper inside the minds of its followers than we were originally led to believe.

As cynical as it seems, our real guess is that Blair didn't reveal his religious beliefs during his time as Prime Minister, not because he was worried about being seen as a nutter, but because of the obvious criticisms that a full-blown Christian waging war on an Islamic country could be subject to. It'll be interesting to witness the work that the new Faith Foundation carries out in order to see what we can really learn about the true motives behind the invasion of Iraq.

Perhaps the news will also help to finally explains Blair's kinship with George W. Bush, a fellow follower of the cross, and an apparent good friend despite their political differences.

Whatever happens, at least we now know to give up our suspicions that he was working for the Devil...

If ever, in the future, an example of a gross hypocrite were to be needed Tony Blair would fill the bill to perfection.
Virtually every word that has fallen (some have had to be forced) from his lips have had no substance to them and have been for effect only.
It will be interesting to see just where this latest charade leads. It certainly will not be heaven, Pope or no Pope.
