Bojo helps extend Oyster network...
Stations from West Drayton and Greenford into Paddington will be added to Oyster's routes from September in a move that Johnson says:
"is excellent news for thousands of First Great Western passengers and takes us a step closer to making Oyster the only ticket you’ll need to travel in London."
But not everybody agrees that the Oyster Card should be the only ticket you need to travel around the capital...
Many privacy groups feel that the card is an affront to privacy laws, especially considering the fact that each card is assigned an individual serial number that allows the London travel networks and transport police to monitor the travel habits of any commuters using the system. Information of all journeys taken by Oyster card users is stored on computers for a period of up to 8 weeks.
Another concern with those opposed to the cards is their use of RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification), which allow users to be located by futuristic alien technology. As Oyster is controlled by TFL, a government initiative, you can see why many are concerned about them.
We're not trying to start one of those conspiracy theories that the fruitloops keep talking about, but it does seem that the government's intervention in the private lives of individuals is becoming a little more dramatic with each day that passes. Perhaps we can expect this on a national level in the future?? Could we go so far as to say that this is just a way of getting the public, who are generally opposed to ID cards, to have one without realising it? Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you...
Boing Boing had an interesting article the other day about gaining access to the RFID chips in the cards. If your opposed to that kind of behaviour, it looks like there's nothing else you can do. If you feel like fighting the system though, or at least having a choice in the matter, then maybe this could be your chance..
