Another disaster looming for Labour?
After the electoral apocalypse at Crewe, it seems that the Labour government are on a mission to systematically alienate as many voters as possible - not so much burning their bridges as napalming the tarmac and ripping down the toll booths.
The speculation that Gordon Brown is going to be forced to step down is growing and growing (which, seeing as it's essentially been taken for granted for months now, is something of an achievement in itself). The question is: could things possibly get any worse? To which the unwelcome answer emerges: yes. Yes it could.
Now that Londoners have elected mop-top buffoon Boris Johnson as mayor (first move: ban alcohol on public transport. Great idea - because the first concern of a group of abusive Carlsberg-swilling football hooligans is the letter of the law, isn't it?), it seems that BoJo is planning to quit the commons, thus leaving the position of Henley Tory candidate up for grabs.
Given that a chimp with reading glasses could gain a sizeable lead over a Labour opponent right now, it's a fair bet that Boris's replacement will be able to engender a great deal of support for the Conservatives in the area. What with the by-election reported to be as early as June 26th or July 3rd, could the defeat-tinged snowball be gathering more pace? Westmonster wouldn't bet against it.
So how long exactly until that leadership challenge?
