War! What is it good for?

War will end 'one day', says Bush

With George Bush having stepped up his criticism of Iran - now explicitly linking them to Al-Qaeda - you'd be forgiven for thinking that the War On Terror will still be ongoing in five thousand years time, when galactic emperor Xrysyx rules the Earth and George Galloway is still babbling on about his innocence in the Oil-For-Food scandal.

You'd be wrong, however. The President has announced that - while there will be no Iraq troops withdrawal this year - the conflict will apparently not be "endless". Easy for him to say, really - come January, he won't be the poor bastard who has to wake up to the latest horrific set of facts and figures every morning.

Yet concessions towards some sort of ending are being made. Tours of duty for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have now been cut from 15 months to one year. Not enough progress for many, though, with the Democratic Party accusing Bush - and the Republicans in general - of lacking any cohesive exit strategy. Which isn't quite true, to be fair. Last time Westmonster checked, passing the buck and retiring to spend all your defence contract money was a perfectly effective way out. Just, y'know, a morally crippled one.

Bush's exact quote? Here you go:

"While this war is difficult, it is not endless."

Less like something a politician would say, more like something Lawrence Fishburne rambled in a Matrix outtake that was deemed too ambivalent. Either way, it's pretty obvious who 'the spoon' is in this particular case.
