Tory poll lead evokes ghastly Thatcher spirit
Everywhere you look, it's like 1987 all over again. Why, just glance over there - it's the debut album from Guns N Roses being listened to by hot new film star Pauly Shore. Phew. And what about that Terry Waite kidnapping, eh? Bet he'll be home in no time.
Oh, enough psuedo-ironic I Love The 1980s posturing. That's, like, so last week. The reason we're ranting and raving about the events of 21 years ago is because the Tories are apparently as popular now as they were then - back in the heyday of Thatcher, no less.
A YouGov poll has emerged that has presumably made Gordon Brown's ever-present headache that little bit worse. The Liberal Democrats take third place (get used to it, guys) with 17 percent, Labour manages a not-much-better 26 while the Tories storm ahead with 44 - the biggest margin in over two decades.
Even if Labour do manage to hold off an election until 2010, that leaves them with just about two years to turn their fortunes around ... fortunes that many are predicting won't involve the leadership of the present PM. This unwelcome set of stats has only served to deepen a political crisis of confidence that seemed nigh-on unimaginable during the Blair years. Face it: Tone took us into an illegal war and didn't get a response this bad.
There is one good thing about returning to 1987, however - that would mean both Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Bigfoot And The Hendersons get national cinema releases. Which would take everyone's mind off the upcoming global recession for a few hours at least.

Very nice. But didn't Dirty Dancing come out around then as well? Careful what you wish for...
