Tory councillor apparently on quitting marathon

Sometimes, as Cast once sang before everyone realised how boring they were, the best thing to do is 'just walk away.'

Advice that Tory councillor David Meikle seems to be following rather too literally. He already has one distinction to his name - he's the sole Tory councillor in Glasgow - but it looks as though he's hell-bent on snagging another label: the Amazing Committee Quitter. Meikle has just stepped down from his second committee in as many weeks, in the latest instalment of a bumbling odyssey that Mr. Bean would turn red-faced at.

Meikle was, until yesterday, involved with the Glasgow licensing board. Following a clampdown by the board on a St. Patrick's Day promotion which entailed dishing out free Guinness, Meikle huffed and puffed that the board had its priorities all topsy-turvy, and had 'gone over the top.' Swiftly followed by a complaint from the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, and a decision to step down.

"I stand by my comments," Meikle said, "but felt that with the complaint in the background it was time to go." All of which would be embarrassing enough had he not quit another committee last week, following a controversial decision to give the green light to a Pollock Park assault course entitled 'Go Ape.'

Apes? Alcohol? If this are the two primary areas Meikle is dealing with, maybe he should consider getting a job as a Wetherspoons manager?
