Tories blame PM for economic disaster

Anyone keeping an eye on the financial news will be aware that - in the wake of the ever-increasing grip of the Credit Crunch - the International Monetary Fund has sheepishly admitted that they should maybe have paid heed to the warning signs a tiny bit earlier.

The Conservatives, however, reckon that the IMF is being a little too hard on itself. They've thrown a comforting arm round the organisation, made it a nice cup of tea, wiped its tears away and whispered "it's alright. You're not really to blame. You know who is? That nasty Gordon Brown, that's who. This is all his fault."

Yes - in a strange hybrid twixt economic assessment and shameless opportunism, Shadow Chancellor George Osbourne has stepped into the fray, sticking up for the IMF and claiming that the Labour government is simply using them as a front to shield their own financial incompetence.

Osbourne went on to say that the IMF had actually issued several warnings, and ranted further that:

"The failure lies not with the IMF but with Gordon Brown who ignored these warnings and whose economic incompetence has left Britain ill prepared for the slowdown. This rehashed announcement can't conceal the fact that Alistair Darling has had no ideas of his own about how to tackle Britain's mounting economic problems."
The IMF has yet to comment on the remarks, though was presumably feeling so vindicated that the entire staff decided to treat themselves to a slap-up meal. Until they checked the state of their bank accounts and had to settle on Nandos instead.
