Springsteen on Obama: 'Born to Run'
Perhaps it's a sign of our age, but Westmonster thinks Bruce Springsteen, well, rocks. We're even setting aside our hatred of the Gunners to see him at the Emirates next month. But one reason we've always loved him, aside from his music, is that he's an original.
So we were distressed, to say the least, to see that as the US Democratic Presidential primary season limps and sputters along its interminable path, The Boss has — like every other celeb on either side of the Atlantic — decided to endorse. And he's picked Barack Obama.
Springsteen writes:
"After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.
Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.
Whoop-dee-doo.
We're not quite sure when it became important for American pols to secure celebrity endorsements, but we are quite sure that we hold in contempt any fool who would make such a decision because the guy who played Josh on "The West Wing" said so. And though it's true Josh isn't quite the celeb Springsteen is (or Clinton endorser Elton John is), the principle remains the same. Bruce's closest brush with politics was penning a song ("Born in the USA") that's been used as a campaign song by a thousand candidates.
So Westmonster has this to say to all you celebs out there who are feeling the need to sway the masses: Please. Don't. Bother.
UPDATE 5:17pm: Bruce also endorsed John Kerry. So there's our point made for us.
