Nick Clegg: ex-Tory?

Following his 'look-at-me, I'm-a-geezer-innit' admission that he has slept with up to 30 women, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg could be facing another, more politically relevant set of demons from his past. And we're not talking about that time he was observed switching off Question Time so he could watch Speed 2 on the other channel.

According to Tory MP Greg Hands, Clegg has more in common with certain rivals than he'd care to admit - namely that he was once a member of Cambridge University's Conservative Association. Now, if that isn't more embarrassing than talking about sexual misdemeanours, Westmonster doesn't know what is.

Hands himself seemed particularly pleased with his detective work, scribbling on the Conservative website:

"I don't have any secrets of past behavioural indiscretions. My only real recollection of him [Clegg] was that he was a member of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.
I am certain that Nick Clegg was a member of CUCA, only for his first year 1986-1987. For the avoidance of any doubt, there was only one "N Clegg" at Robinson College.

Interestingly, having checked with the then chair of the Cambridge University SDP and the chair of the Cambridge University Liberals, they have no recollection of a Nick Clegg, so it seems he showed interest in only the Conservatives at the time."

A spokesman for Clegg protested that, despite the evidence:

"He has no recollection of joining this group and he never knowingly had anything to do with the Conservatives."

Wow. Sounds like one hell of a drunken university night, then. Still - we've all been there, haven't we? You knock back a few too many drinks, the evening continues to escalate, and before you know it you've signed up to a right-wing treehouse club populated by jug-eared trust-fund cretins with names like Maximillian, Tilly and Jemima.

It's guaranteed to give that hangover a nasty edge.
