Dick Cheney's naked woman controversy

Internet phenomenons are a curious thing. Be they Rick Astley career revivals or dancing walruses, as soon as something captures the public imagination it's virtually guaranteed to spread like wildfire. The subject of the latest online furore? None other than Vice President Dick Cheney.

A picture of Cheney enjoying a fly-fishing trip - featured on the official White House website, no less - has suddenly become open to all sorts of interpretation. Cheney is wearing a pair of dark sunglasses in the photograph, you see, and some eagle-eyed scamp has pointed out something rather odd in the reflection: what seems to be a naked woman.

What's going on, then? Was the whole fishing expedition a cover story, so that Cheney could sit by the riverside and watch a couple of naughty DVDs on his laptop? Was he maybe accosted by a beckoning mermaid, using her charms (typical Pisces) to tempt him to a watery fate? Or is the whole thing just a coincidence, and the reflection is actually Cheney's hand and arm taking on a rather unfortunate likeness?

Such is the controversy - or "time-wasting", as those in the business like to call it - that an investigative photo anaylst has reviewed the snapshot, and emerged with the following bombshell: "In one lens of his sunglasses you can clearly tell it is a sleeved arm of Cheney or a fishing companion. The other lens has an extreme distortion that, without looking at it closely, could be misconstrued."

Best of all is the official White House response. Is it a naked lady? Course not, sighed a spokesperson - "clearly the picture shows a hand casting a rod."

Well, quite.
