Council Tax 'remorseless', say Tories
The cost of living in Britain is become unbearable. Sure, life may be just rosy if you're a TV executive getting paid thirty million pounds per second to come up with ideas like The Little Girl With Seven Chins or Stalinist Cannibal Holiday Cruise, but what about life for the rest of us downtrodden, hard-working, run-of-the-mill citizens? What about the Average Joe?
Have no fear. The Tories - despite everything they've ever done, ever - care deeply about the Average Joe. And they're just fuming that council tax has been on the increasing rise. Infact, they've gone so far as to call the whole thing "remorseless".
Accusations are rife that central government is continually siphoning off money from local town halls, thereby passing the buck onto you, the voter, and giving the Conservatives a chance to have a good old shout. Which MP John Baron embraced wholeheartedly, ranting that taxpayers were paying "the bill for these extra responsibilities when they are already having to labour under higher food bills and fuel prices".
Local government secretary Hazel Blears valiantly defended the mothership, however, by claiming that the standard of local services was just peachy, adding that "average council tax in Labour authorities in England is £204 less than in Tory-controlled areas."
The Tory line on how they would change things? Well ... there isn't one. Not just yet. Just a lot of red-faced indignation. Which you don't need to watch the news for - simply pop round to Westmonster's house next time we open the monthly bill and you'll get a demonstration for free.
