Basil Fawlty: Obama's speechwriter?
Should Barack Obama win the Democratic nomination for U.S. president, he'll need all the help he can get to beat John McCain in the fall. Apparently all too aware of this fact is John Cleese — ex-Monty Python, ex-Basil Fawlty — and he's offering to do something about it.
In an interview with Bristol newspaper the Western Daily Press, Cleese has stated he'll forego his annual summer return to Britain to chip in for the Obama campaign:
"I am due to come to Europe in November but I may be tied up until then because if Barack Obama gets the nomination I'm going to offer my services to him as a speech writer because I think he is a brilliant man."
Obama's known for his soaring rhetoric, so he may not need much help there. But he has had quite a few problems courting the Latino vote, so perhaps Cleese could organise Manuel to do a Spanish-language outreach advert for the Obama campaign?
