Telegraph's Gore '08 'scoop'
Maybe Telegraph Washington correspondent Tim Shipman is worried his plum D.C. assignment could be in jeopardy.
In a major scoop, The Sunday Telegraph writer managed to re-hash a week-old, long-shot theory initially floated by Time hack Joe Klein, that Al Gore could unite a divided Democratic party in a brokered convention, stepping in as a compromise presidential candidate.
"Former Gore aides now believe he could emerge as a compromise candidate acceptable to both camps at the party's convention in Denver during the last week of August."
"Two former Gore campaign officials have told The Sunday Telegraph that a scenario first mapped out by members of Mr Gore's inner circle last May now has a sporting chance of coming true."
There's also a "sporting chance" that Mr Bean could get the Democratic nomination, but there's no chance at all that there was a single quote in the Telegraph piece from the alleged former Gore aides it cited as sources.
The only quote in the piece was an out-of-context citation from a Florida Democratic congressman, Tim Mahoney, who had been trying to make a case for seating Florida's now-excluded delegates at the convention, but had made no mention whatsoever of the former Vice President.
Westmonster extends its congratulations to Mr Shipman on his ace reporting.
