Cesspool on the Potomac

Senator Clinton (D-Belfast)

Even 231 years after callously throwing the King overboard, the colonies still can't seem to let go of Britain — we've even become an issue in their Presidential campaign. This time, participants in the Northern Ireland peace process are being called upon to confirm or refute Hillary Clinton's attempt to bolster her foreign policy credentials by contending that she played a major role in the lead-up to the Good Friday Accords.

Depending on whether you listen to David Trimble, Gerry Adams, or John Hume, Clinton either sat around and watched (Trimble), was "very well informed" (Adams), or "made countless calls and contacts speaking to leaders and opinion makers on all sides, urging them to keep moving forward" (Hume).

There's no word on whether Clinton is a Unionist, though we feel it's fairly safe to say she's not a Republican (arf!).

Westmonster sees two possibilities here for Clinton: if she becomes President, maybe Ulster can become the 51st state. If she loses the election, she can always turn her attention to a campaign for First Minister.

A lesson in geography for Brits:

Northern Ireland != 'Ulster'
United Kingdom != 'Britain'
