Watch ID cards morph

The ID card debate is beginning to move along interesting lines. Encapsulated these are:

  • A growing and significant minority (25%) who are firmly opposed to the idea and, according to the NO2ID campaign, could refuse to comply with it (wishful thinking that, of course, as most of that 25% would lose their nerve)
  • A growing sense that the ID scheme could morph into something else: an immigration and child protection register. Still Big Brotherish, but more in keeping with the average Sun Reader's concerns: keeping foreigners out, and cutting the gonads off child molesters
  • A new majority (52%) uncomfortable with "personal information that is provided to one government department to be shared between all government departments that provide public services."

The report's by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and was sent to newspapers before being added to the Foundation's website (sigh). We'll keep an eye on the site and link to it when it becomes available.
