Meedja on the Insanity Pills

Telegraph's crisis of confidence

Westmonster interrupts our hangover to bring you this shocking news: Britain apparently has laws to stop minors purchasing alcohol. That's right, it's true, we read it in the Telegraph.

The Telegraph editorial puts the binges down to cheap alcohol (going out on a limb there, eh?) but asks whether it's the role of a free-market government to raise prices, and wonders whether responsible drinkers should pay the price for vomiting yobs. The editorial questions whether the drinking age should be raised.

That's a lot of questions for an "editorial." But wait, down there at the end, it suggests that better enforcement of the drinking age might be a solution.

Westmonster asks: why is this editorial so wishy-washy? Westmonster wonders why the Telegraph is so pensive about this? Westmonster questions whether the Telegraph has a spine at all.

Trying to enforce the law that little bit stronger won't work. Its a cultural problem. Brits just like getting smashed. We are driven by social customs from 7am to 5.30 pm.

After that we can drink, be merry and loose our inhibitions.
