Who won the GOP debate?

At long last, primary debate season in America is drawing to a close. Tonight, the remaining Democrats have their first and only mano-a-womano debate, but last night saw the final scheduled Republican debate held, naturally, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Westmonster can tell you that the debate happened, but we can't really tell you who won — because nobody seems to agree on who won.

Though (nutcase) Ron Paul and (possible nutcase) Mike Huckabee were both on stage, this debate was really about the two remaining viable candidates, John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Slate's Trailhead blog gave the night to Romney, calling the former Massachusetts governor "sharper than a Mormon steeple" and asking "When did John McCain become slightly senile?" Slate said Romney gave all three wings of the so-called "Reagan coalition" something to hold on to, whilst McCain "prattled."

On the other hand, Jonathan Martin argues on Politico that McCain successfully put Romney off his focus on the economy, and into a protracted debate on Iraq, in the wake of McCain's specious claim that Romney advocated setting a timetable for Iraq withdrawal. Romney, Martin said, was able to make some points about McCain's departures from GOP orthodoxy, but that by stepping into McCain's Iraq "trap," Romney had blown his "his best opportunity to bounce back from his loss in Florida Tuesday night and set the contours of the race over the next five days."

With McCain picking up steam, and having won the endorsement both of Rudy Giuliani and, apparently, Arnold Schwarzenegger, things are looking grim for Romney at the moment. Super Tuesday will likely answer the question of Romney's relevancy.
