Woohoo! We've got pensions!

RetirementLane.jpgSome good news is always nice at Christmas, and the government's found its issue to be beneficent on. They're pouring a huge amount of cash in to compensate the 130,000 workers who had lost theirs when their companies went bust.

This being politics however, the story in the papers isn't really about pensioners being rescued. It's about a weak El Gordo "surrendering".

The Guardian: Pensioners win compensation after five years

The main story is that the pensioners won, says this headline. Good enough.

The Indy: Ministers cave in with £1bn extra to cover lost pensions

Reading this one gives one the impression that some poor minion was made to look up "cave in" in the thesaurus over and over again.

The Telegraph: Gordon Brown's u-turn over lost pensions

Ah, The Telegraph was part of the campaign to sort out the pensions. That's why they crow about it in the headline.

The Times: Climbdown concludes battle over pensions

Good non-use of "cave in." They obviously used the same thesaurus as the Indy.

So, in summary: £900 million is being injected into a rescue package for those who would otherwise have no pensions. Fair enough. El Gordo is a pathetically weak leader who has been forced into direct action by the bravery of our independent press. And thesauruses rule!
