Ministry for Not Holding One's Breath
Is that your Final Ballot?
Watch out, Chris Tarrant, there's a new game show coming to a local election near you. That's right, Communities Secretary Hazel Blears is about to be presented with a set of recommendations from the independent Councillors Commission, which includes a proposal that voters in local government elections be entered into a lottery for Big! Cash! Prizes!
Commission chair Dame Jane Roberts had this comment, "The commission believes we should incentivise voting and local authorities should be able to develop and use creative schemes to encourage voters to turn out to vote. One of the ways of doing this would be to offer voters a chance to enter into a lottery."
Among the other proposals put forth by the Commission:
- Redundancy payments up to £60,000 to councillors who get voted out of office
- Local officials to be limited to five terms in office
- Lowering the voting age to 16
- A "communications
slush fundallowance" to fund councillors' PR materials
Westmonster would love to comment further, but we're busy setting up campaign headquarters for our council run.
