Lies, damned lies, and opinion polls?
As the end nears in the interminable Liberal Democrat leadership contest and voting for the Parliamentary equivalent of Head of Year 7 continues, the Guardian releases a poll that shows Huhne catching up:
Forty per cent of just over 200 Lib Dems questioned by the Guardian after a hustings in Cambridge on Wednesday evening - as voting papers were sent out - were backing the environment spokesman. Another 40% were undecided or preferred not to say and only 20% were planning to vote for Clegg.
Both Mike Smithson and Liberal Democrat Voice gently point out that the Graun had Chris down as a surefire bonkers cert last time as well. Nevertheless, this could be good for Clegg: if he is suffering from "front-runner syndrome" as the Guardian reports, then this poll could concentrate the minds of the membership.
