Is this a coup?

Iraq 231107.jpgBen Brogan certainly thinks so. No sooner had the Gord left for Uganda than a selection of military gentlemen with startling sounding names like Lord Humphrey-Montmorency III start popping up on the Today Programme to declare martial law outline their concerns at Government policy in Iraq.

Apparently, the fact that Defence Minister Des Browne is also Scottish Secretary is all they talk about on the streets of Basra, and revolution is in the air. Well, look on the bright side: a real police state would stop Henry Porter writing about how Britain is one.

Silver linings and all that.

Presumably these Chiefs of Staff tendered their resignations in protest against the risks being run by the 'Poor bloody infantry?'
