Treaty threatens Tory lovefest
Whilst it looked like it was going to cause problems for a beleagured Gord and his depressed comrades in the wake of the non-election, Cameron and his party have merrily brought up the issue of a referendum on the EU Treaty with monotonous regularity.
However, just as Brown's reluctance to rule out a snap poll came back to bite him in the arse, so too could Cameron's Boy Wonder of Democracy stylings now that Brown has committed Parliament to three months worth of debate on the EU Treaty.
Forty Tories - including John Redwood, Graham Brady, and IDS - are demanding a referendum even if Parliament ratifies the Treaty. Hague is reportedly attempting to call the Eurosceptics within the party to heel, and is not overly keen on a referendum if it's the Tories who are calling it, as he is worried that it would damage his party's relations with France and Germany.
Nothing causes an outbreak of bloody civil war within the Tories like a good old debate on Europe, eh? It'll also be interesting to see just how committed Cameron is to a referendum - afterall, we wouldn't like to suggest that after all the hyperbole on The British People Deciding, it turns out it was just point scoring all along, now would we?
