Top Trumps: LibDem leadership edition
Well, it's gone 4pm and nominations have just closed for the position of Liberal Democrat leader. Unless RecessMonkey gets his wish and there's been a last minute flurry of support for Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen, it looks like it's going to a two-horse race between Nicky Clegg and Chris Huhne.
So far they've got 27 and 10 nominations respectively amongst MPs, but the long, long, long weeks of campaigning ahead mean that there's still everything to play for.
That's not to say that Nicky and Huhne haven't been busy already - each have been going hard on a number of issues designed to appeal to party members and (to a lesser extent) the wider public.
The issues that have got the widest coverage is Clegg getting all "we shall not be moved" on ID cards, and Huhne promising to Ban the Bomb. So how are they doing with these, do we reckon?
Civil disobedience over ID cards
- Contender: Nick Clegg
- Policy: To oppose ID cards to the extent he says he will refuse to hand over his personal information to [cue spooky music] The State [end spooky music] if and when the scheme becomes law.
- Popularity with LibDem members: 7/10. The libertarian movement is definitely this season's top look amongst the politically engaged in general and the Liberal Democrats in particular, so it should go down very well. He loses points for the "bullshit" factor. That is, when Westmonster heard this grand plan, she muttered "like bollocks he would," and suspects she's not alone in this assessment.
- Popularity within the country: 6/10. Whilst support for the scheme is hardly orgasmic, voters might have some qualms about voting for a party led by a man who threatens to don a loin-cloth and start channelling Ghandi every time he disagrees with a statutory instrument.
- House of Commons reaction: 2/10. We suspect that - in the gentlest of tones, naturally - Cameron and the Gord would never tire of reminding the House that MPs are there to make the law, not break it.
Non-renewal of Trident
- Contender: Chris Huhne
- Policy: To scrap Trident and invest the money instead in Our Boys.
- Popularity with the LibDem members: 9/10. The Greenham Common tendency will love it, he seasoned his statement with a twist of anti-Americanism for that extra zing, and LibDems don't tend to have vast numbers of members within the British industries who would be detrimentally affected by the policy. Nice one!
- Popularity within the country: 5/10. Based on the highly representative sense at Westmonster HQ that opinion is divided unequally between the apathetic, the zealously for, the zealously against, and those who think that £15bn is quite a lot of money to spend on a war-head we're never going to use. Although sensible voters should be suspicious of the seriousness of a politician who's clearly never watched Yes Minister.
- House of Commons reaction: 6/10. He shouldn't get beaten about this too much, and might even hoover up some support from the
Awkward SquadCampaign Group of Labour MPs.
Let's see what new (and hopefully insane) Top Trumping the proper campaigning brings!
