Philip Webster had a good story in the Times yesterday about how Brown had never really been sold on the idea of an autumn election, but by the time he moved to dampen speculation it had taken on a life of its own.

In the final analysis, the chaos wasn't really anybody's exclusive fault, but this fact hasn't stopped the distinct whiff of the scapegoat being sensed around the the corridors of power.
