Dave to Scotland: ‘Drop dead.’

malcolm rifkind 281007.jpgThe main story seems to be the Observer's front page which outlines the Conservative and Unionist Party's plans to strip Scottish politicians of the right to vote on English laws. Guess what folks? The Gord is, like, Scottish! OMG! This devilishly cunning and subtle plan is being spearheaded by Sir Malcolm Rifkind and is set to introduce proposals for a English Grand Committee.

In unrelated news, Labour has edged ahead of the Tories and are on 41 to the latter's 40 according to an IPSOS/MORI poll for the, uh, Observer. In some ways it would be safer for the comrades not to increase their lead in next weekend's polls: the Boy David might start consulting on the democratic desirability of nuking Wales.

Matty D'Ancona in the Telegraph was wowed with Brown's liberty stylings the other day, but Henry Porter celebrates the speech (as he does every Sunday) with frothings over how the PM and Straw are merely agents of a sinister plot that wants to Destroy Our Freedom. Well, it's a slow day and that sort of stuff plays well with the Comment is Free loons.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor explains why he is fighting for a shorter abortion limit. I think we all know the answer to that one. Sharp eyed readers might remember the good Cardinal from his sterling work as the Bishop of Arundel, where he dealt with allegations of child abuse with the severity we've come to expect from such men

Here comes a LibDem leadership bulletin: concentrate! Wee Nicky - smarting from allegations that he and Davy Cameron are best buds - announces that David smells of poo and is illiberal to boot. Meanwhile Chris Huhne makes a play for the Greenham Common vote with the statement that he would scrap Trident.

Meanwhile the Observer has a special report on the Comeback of the Gord, who is said to be determined to get the "vision" back on track. Brown: "the last few weeks have been tough but they made me that much stronger, made me work a little bit harder, made me that much smarter, so thanks for making me… a FIGHTER!" Good stuff.

And finally, Minette Marrin reckons that Michael Moore is a smug populist who distorts the facts for a good visual and an opportunity to stand shouting in the street at confused executives. Usually we'd agree with this analysis, but it appears that Minette's got her journalistic undergarments in a tangle over the fact that Moore quite likes the NHS. Which makes him an IDIOT. Fact.
