While You Were Sleeping

The new democracy, worried Tories, and lady-bits

  • Trade unions set to utilise their bloc vote over public sector pay: the last time that they can use this method of holding the Labour executive to account. After the, er, reforms to party structure go through next week, the composite motion will be a thing of the past. Worry ye not, though: there'll be plenty more time for debate, forums, webchats, new manners of engagement with the party and "listening." So that's okay, then, innit?
  • Iain Dale's got an article in the Telegraph entitled "Why The Internet Frightens Politicians." Want the real answer, folks? It's because most MPs have trouble working the coffee pump in Portcullis House without blowing it up. T'interweb? Fat chance.
  • Dizzy on "Brown Tories." This is not, as Westmonster first thought, a new definition for panicked members of Dave's team who spend their waking hours praying there won't be an autumn election.
  • Intriguing update from John Angliss on Socksgate: apparently Beeb bosses could have decided against the name "Cookie" as it's also slang for...erm...lady-bits.
  • The Telegraph reports that a sizeable portion of the PLP are pissed off with the way Brown intends to stage-manage Conference. Whaaaat? In the era of the "new politics," listening, local engagement and the democratisation of the party structure (see above)? Shurely some mistake?
