Don't Look Ethel!
The Great UK Caption Competition
Exciting news courtesy of the Daily Mail this morning: Gordon Brown is running a competition in which we choose a motto for the UK.
Predictably, this has elicited a response nothing short of apocalyptic from the Daily Mail readership:
Sorry Gordon with a lot of us gone and more immigrants flooding in I do not think you will have enough "British" left for this! (Dave, Houston USA)
Ah, it's like Comment is Free in reverse, innit? Instead of the second comment on an article about butterfly farming in the Balkans being met with a spittle-flecked rant on Iraq, Daily Mailers see the dread hand of "immigrants" behind every perceived evil. Note also that Dave is posting from the USA.
Next up is Phil:
Hey Mr Brown, here's a motto... If you want to live in Britain, live like the British and respect their country, their tradition, their laws - don't ask them to live like you and change themselves for you. You are their guest, not the other way around. (Sung to the tune of 'we shall not be moved'!)
Phil is posting from...New Zealand. Natch
Well, seeing as these bloody foreigners can't do their patriotic duty, it falls to Westmonster to come up with the goods. Laydees and gentlemumps, given the recent polling on Brown being the most trusted of the three leaders, the undoubted winning motto is: In Gord We Trust.
Boom boom! Thank you, we're here all week.
