Behind the Terrace curtain

Lies, damned lies, and opinion polls?

gordon 270907.jpg As Ladbrokes stop taking bets on an autumn election and Hazel Blears is already tiring her Cabinet colleagues out with her relentless enthusiasm for the the idea, it looks like Brown's popularity with the public has never been more orgasmic.

Following the recent YouGov poll that put Labour 11 points ahead, party apparatchiks have been getting moist over the fact that the poll seems to show a 17 point lead amongst female voters.

But the bloke who runs the UK Polling Report website isn't so sure:

Those last figures stick out like a sore thumb - it could be a sudden surge in Labour’s support amongst women, but I suspect it’s more likely to just be the result of it being a snap poll with half the normal sample size.

The other polling agencies seem to point to the real lead for Labour being about three or four points and bearing in mind that you're meant to assume that the margin of error is usually three or four points...maybe Gord should be a little more hesitant about sending off Hazel to dust off the clipboards, polish the sturdy walking boots, and buy a job-lot of chocolate digestives?

Yeah, you're right. Westmonster really DOESN'T want an election - it's taken her nearly two and a half years to recover from the last one.
